    Call To Worship

    Scripture Reading:                                                                  Psalm 143

    1 Hear my prayer, O Lord;
    give ear to my pleas for mercy!
    In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!

    2 Enter not into judgment with your servant,
    for no one living is righteous before you.

    3 For the enemy has pursued my soul;
    he has crushed my life to the ground;
    he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead.

    4 Therefore my spirit faints within me;
    my heart within me is appalled.

    5 I remember the days of old;
    I meditate on all that you have done;
    I ponder the work of your hands.

    6 I stretch out my hands to you;
    my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.         Selah

    7 Answer me quickly, O Lord!
    My spirit fails!
    Hide not your face from me,
    lest I be like those who go down to the pit.

    Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love,
    for in you I trust.
    Make me know the way I should go,
    for to you I lift up my soul.

    9 Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord!
    I have fled to you for refuge.

    10 Teach me to do your will,
    for you are my God!
    Let your good Spirit lead me
    on level ground!

    11 For your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life!
    In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!

    12 And in your steadfast love you will cut off my enemies,
    and you will destroy all the adversaries of my soul,
    for I am your servant.

    Declaring What We Believe

    Red Hymnal #418

    The General Confession

    Almighty and most merciful Father,

    we have erred, and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep.

    We have offended against Thy holy laws.

    We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,

    and we have done those things which we ought not to have done;

    and there is no health in us.

    O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders.

    Spare them, O Lord, which confess their faults.

    Restore them that are penitent, according to Thy promises

    declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake,

    that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life –

    to the glory of Thy holy name. Amen.

    We Respond to God’s Presence

    All I Have Is Christ

    Verse 1

    I once was lost in darkest night, yet thought I knew the way

    The sin that promised joy and life had led me to the grave

    I had no hope that You would own a rebel to Your will

    And if You had not loved me first I would refuse You still

    Verse 2

    But as I ran my hell bound race indifferent to the cost

    You looked upon my helpless state and led me to the cross

    And I beheld God’s love displayed: You suffered in my place

    You bore the wrath reserved for me; now all I know is grace.

    Chorus:           Hallelujah, All I have is Christ

    Hallelujah, Jesus is my life

    Verse 3

    Now Lord, I would be Yours alone and live so all might see

    The strength to follow Your commands could never come from me.

    O Father, use my ransomed life in any way You choose

    And let my song forever be my only boast is You.      (Repeat Chorus)

    Studies in the Book of Job, Part 2

    “Oh, Be Careful Little Eyes What You See” – Job 31:1-11

    Pastor Jim Rose

    Review of The Book of Job

    The lens through which we can understand the speeches in Job is the contrast between a religious or contractual relationship with God and a personal or covenantal one.

    Eliphaz viewed religion as _________________________

    Bildad viewed religion as __________________________

    Zophar viewed religion as _________________________

    Job never claimed to be sinless but he did reject the assumption of his friends that all suffering is the result of divine retribution—the basic premise of religion. In the midst of his great suffering, Job longed for a personal relationship that we can call “covenantal.”

    I. Job’s Covenant Relationship (Job 31:1-4)

    Hebrew word for covenant is _______________________ a legally binding permanent promise.

    Even as Job had a covenant with his _______________ so God had a covenant to ____________ all Job’s steps

    II. Why Job Needed the Covenant (Job 31:5-8)
