    Red Hymnal #392

    Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

    Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest home;

    All is safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin:

    God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied;

    Come to God’s own temple, come, Raise the song of harvest home.

    All the world is God’s own field, Fruit unto His praise to yield;

    Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrows grown:

    First the blade, and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear;

    Lord of harvest, grant that we Wholesome grain and pure may be.

    For the Lord our God shall come And shall take His harvest home;

    From His field shall in that day All offenses purge away,

    Give His angels charge at last In the fire the tares to cast,

    But the fruitful ears to store In His garner evermore.

    Even so, Lord, quickly come To Thy final harvest home;

    Gather Thou Thy people in, Free from sorrow, free from sin:

    There forever purified, In Thy presence to abide;

    Come, with all Thine angels, come, Raise the glorious harvest home.

    Amen.

    Red Hymnal #389

    Let All Things Now Living

    Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving

    To God the Creator triumphantly raise,

    Who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us,

    Who guideth us on to the end of our days.

    His banners are o’er us, His light goes before us,

    A pillar of fire shining forth in the night,

    ‘Til shadows have vanished and darkness is banished,

    As forward we travel from light into light.

    His law He enforces: the stars in their courses,

    The sun in His orbit, obediently shines;

    The hills and the mountains, The rivers and fountains,

    The deeps of the ocean proclaim Him divine.

    We too, should be voicing our love and rejoicing,

    With glad adoration a song let us raise,

    ‘Til all things now living unite in thanksgiving

    To God in the highest, hosanna and praise!

    Scripture Reading:                                                              Genesis 3:14-15

    14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
    “Because you have done this,
    cursed are you above all livestock
    and above all beasts of the field;
    on your belly you shall go,
    and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

    15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and her offspring;
    he shall bruise your head,
    and you shall bruise his heel.”

    Prayer of Invocation

    Leader:       O Lord, that you would tear open the heavens
    and come down to us.

    People:        O that you would shock us with your presence…
    like fire causes water to boil.

    Leader:       We have become comfortable,
    and your holiness reminds us of our sinfulness.

    People:        In the past we were in darkness. You wooed us with

                            Your presence and came to us and saved us.

    Leader:       All our words and deeds are like a filthy cloth.

    People:        We need to be washed clean.

    Leader:   Today we light one candle to remind us our need for a savior.

    Come, Lord, restore us. Our world is in need of Jesus the

    savior. Let your light shine on us, that we may see our sin.

    Come and dwell with us, that we may be washed clean

    and made new. Amen.

    People:    O Emmanuel, Jesus Christ,

    Desire of every nation, Savior of all peoples,

    Come and dwell among us.

    Red Hymnal #169

    O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

    O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel,

    That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear.

    Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

    O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer,

    Our spirits by Thine advent here.

    Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,

    And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

    Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

    O come, Thou Wisdom from on high, And order all things, far and nigh;

    To us the path of knowledge show, And cause us in her ways to go.

    Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

    O come, Desire of nations, bind In one the hearts of all mankind;

    Bid Thou our sad divisions cease, And be Thyself our King of peace.

    Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

    Latin: c. 9th Century. Tr. John M. Neale & Henry S. Coffin.

    All:

    We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

    Men & Boys:

    And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

    begotten from the Father before all ages,

    God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

    begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father.

    Women & Girls

    Through him all things were made.

    For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven;

    he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

    and was made man.

    Jubilee Singers

    He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;

    he suffered and was buried.

    Women:

    The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.

    He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

    Men:

    He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead.

    His kingdom will never end.

    All:

    And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life.

    He proceeds from the Father and the Son,

    and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.

    He spoke through the prophets.

    We believe in one holy universal and apostolic church.

    We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

    We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,

    and to life in the world to come.

    Amen.

    Red Hymnal #171

    Joy to the World!

    Joy to the world! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King;

    Let every heart prepare Him room,

    And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing,

    And heaven and heaven and nature sing.

    Joy to the world! The Savior reigns: Let men their songs employ;

    While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

    Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy,

    Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

    No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground;

    He comes to make His blessings flow

    Far as the curse if found, Far as the curse if found,

    Far as, far as the curse is found.

    He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove

    The glories of His righteousness

    And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love,

    And wonders, wonders of His love.

    Psalm 75 B                                                                    Blue Psalter, pg. 462

    Psalm 75: Canticle: My Soul Cries Out

    Verse 1

    My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great,

    And my spirit sings of the wondrous things

    that you bring to the ones who wait.

    You fixed your sight on your servant’s plight,

    and my weakness you did not spurn,

    So from east to west shall my name be blest.

    Could the world be about to turn?

    Refrain:   My heart shall sing of the day you bring.

    Let the fires of your justice burn.

    Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near,

    And the world is about to turn!

    Verse 2

    Though I am small, my God, my all, you work great things in me,

    And your mercy will last from the depths of the past

    to the end of the age to be.

    Your very name puts the proud to shame,

    and to those who would for you yearn,

    You will show your might, put the strong to flight,

    for the world is about to turn.

    Repeat Refrain

    Verse 3

    From the halls of power to the fortress tower,

    not a stone will be left on stone.

    Let the king beware for your justice tears every tyrant from his throne.

    The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn;

    There are tables spread, every mouth be fed,

    for the world is about to turn.

    Repeat Refrain

    Verse 4

    Though the nations rage from age to age,

    we remember who holds us fast;

    God’s mercy must deliver us from the conqueror’s crushing grasp.

    This saving word that our forebears heard

    is the promise which holds us bound,

    Till the spear and rod can be crushed by God,

    who is turning the world around

    Repeat Refrain
