    Holy Spirit, from Heaven Descended

    Verse 1

    Holy Spirit, from heaven descended,

in the form of a dove you were seen

with a message of love from the Father above,

giving comfort to all who believe.

    How we long for your fragrance to fill us;

we confess our deep need for your grace.

Shelter us with your wings, turn our heart as it sings.

Lift our eyes to behold Jesus’ face.

    Verse 2

Holy Spirit, with flame you anointed

the believers on that Pentecost, bringing

heavenly light and parting great might

to believers as sign to the lost.

    As the tower of fire was for Israel;

fill our lives now with light from on high.

You have sealed everyone who is bought by the Son.

May our works his great name glorify.

    Verse 3

Holy Spirit, flow freely among us, sacred oil

    giving sight where sin blinds;

just as Aaron of old lit the lamps in the cold,

warm our hearts and illumine our minds.

You have baptized us into one body.

Living Water, now cleanse and renew.

Sanctify us, we pray, that God’s Word we obey,

and to Christ may we ever be true.

    Verse 4

Holy Spirit of God, breathe upon us.

Fill our hearts with your love, joy, and peace.

    Paraclete, you are nigh; interceding on high;

grant that our meager faith would increase.

Be our lamp to interpret the Scriptures,

be our guide to instruct in the way.

We surrender our will as our cup you refill

    to victoriously live every day.

    Scripture Reading:                                                         Galatians 1:1-5

1 Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—

2 and all the brothers who are with me,
    To the churches of Galatia:

3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,

4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

    Declaring What We Believe

For Freedom, Christ Has Set Us Free

    Galatians 5:1

“For freedom, Christ has set us free!” What joy is ours to claim!

No more enslaved, humanity finds life in Jesus' name.

We try, Lord, to be justified through all the works we do.

Yet you adopt us, saying, “Child, It’s Christ who makes you new.”

    Galatians 2:20

We’re clothed in Christ and we belong; Now no one waits outside.

In him we find our common song; Old ways no more divide.

“It is no longer I who live, But Christ who lives in me.”

He died for us, new life to give — And new identity.

    Galatians 5:22-23

Now, Spirit-filled, may we be led from ways that would destroy.

May we your people turn instead to lives of love and joy.

May we find peace that makes us whole and patience everywhere.

God, give us kindness, self-control, and hearts and hands that share.

    We Respond to God’s Presence

For the Fruit of All Creation

    1. For the fruit of all creation, thanks be to God.

For His gifts to every nation, thanks be to God.

    For the plowing, sowing reaping,

silent growth while we are sleeping,

future needs in earth’s safe keeping, thanks be to God.

    1. In the just reward of labor, God’s will is done.

In the help we give our neighbor, God’s will is done.

In our world-wide task of caring for the hungry and despairing,

in the harvests we are sharing, God’s will is done.

    1. For the harvests of the Spirit, thanks be to God.

For the good we all inherit, thanks be to God.

For the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us,

most of all, that love has found us, thanks be to God.

Psalm 78C                                                                  Blue Psalter, pg 482

Open Your Ears, O Faithful People

Open your ears, O faithful people, open your ears and hear God’s word.

Open your hearts, O royal priesthood, God has come to you.

Chorus:    God has spoken to the people, hallelujah!

God has spoken words of wisdom, hallelujah!

God has spoken to the people, hallelujah!

God has spoken words of wisdom, hallelujah!

They who have ears to hear the message,

they who have ears, now let them hear.

They who would learn the way of wisdom, let them hear God’s Word.

    Repeat Chorus

    What we have heard we’ll teach our children;

May they have ears to hear God’s Word.

Let us through every generation make God’s wonders known.

    Repeat Chorus

    In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song.

    This Cornerstone, this solid ground

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease.

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This Gift of love and righteousness

Scorned by the ones He came to save.

Till on that cross as Jesus died

The wrath of God was satisfied

For every sin on Him was laid

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay

Light of the world by darkness slain.

Then bursting forth in glorious day

Up from the grave He rose again.

And as He stands in victory

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me.

For I am His and He is mine,

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life no fear in death.

This is the power of Christ in me.

From life’s first cry to final breath

    Jesus commands my destiny

No power of Hell, no scheme of man

Can ever pluck me from His hand.

‘Til He returns or calls me home

Here in the power of Christ I stand.
