    Call To Worship

    Scripture Reading:

    Mark 1:29-34 – Jesus Heals Many

    29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

    30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.

    31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

    32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.

    33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door.

    34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

    Mark 9:33-37 – Who Is the Greatest?

    33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?”

    34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

    35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

    36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them,

    37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

    Prayer of Invocation

    Declaring What We Believe

    Across the Lands

    1. You’re the Word of God the Father from before the world began;

    Every star and every planet has been fashioned by Your hand.

    All creation holds together by the power of Your voice.

    Let the skies declare Your glory; let the land and seas rejoice

    Chorus:     You’re the Author of creation; You’re the Lord of every man,

    And Your cry of love rings out across the lands.

    1. Yet You left the gaze of angels, came to seek and save the lost

    And exchanged the joy of Heaven for the anguish of a cross.

    With a prayer You fed the hungry, with a word You calmed the sea;

    Yet how silently You suffered, that the guilty may go free.

    Chorus

    1. With a shout You rose victorious, wrestling victory from the grave

    And ascended into Heaven, leading captives in Your way.

    Now You stand before the Father, interceding for Your own;

    From each tribe and tongue and nation You are leading sinners home.

    Chorus

    We Respond to God’s Presence

    On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry

    1. On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry announces that the Lord is nigh.

    Awake and harken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings!

    1. Then cleansed be every life from sin;

    make straight the way for God within,

    And let us all our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there.

    1. We hail you as our Savior, Lord, our refuge and our great reward.

    Without your grace we waste away like flowers that wither

    and decay.

    1. Stretch forth your hand, our health restore,

    and make us rise to fall no more.

    O let your face upon us shine and fill the world with love divine.

    1. All praise to you, eternal Son, whose advent has our freedom won,

    Whom with the Father we adore, and Holy Spirit, evermore.

    A Sower’s Seed Fell on a Path

    1. A sower’s seed fell on a path packed hard by foot and cart,

    And hungry sparrows ate their fill before a root could start.

    Refrain:

    Lord, give us ears to hear your Word and hearts where seed can grow.

    1. And some fell down where rocky ground no sustenance could give.

    Beneath the scorching noonday sun no tender plant could live.

    Repeat Refrain

    1. And some seed fell among the weeds that wove a tangling snare

    To choke the green and budding plants that never fruit would bear.

    Repeat Refrain

    1. But some seed fell on fertile soil and flourished more and more

    Until the joyous harvest time, when hundred fold it bore.

    Repeat Refrain

  • Jesus Heard with Deep Compassion

    Verse 1

    Jesus heard with deep compassion pleas for healing, cries of pain;

    Cured the lame and cleansed the leper, gave the blind their sight again.

    At his voice, tormenting spirits fled a madman’s tortured mind;

    Clothed and healed, he went rejoicing, home and family to find.

    Verse 2

    Jesus touched the lives of outcasts, weak or sinful, scorned or poor;

    Gave them self-respect and courage, trust and faith and hope secure.

    Truly hearing, truly seeing deep within each troubled soul,

    Jesus healed their wounded spirits, sent them forth with lives made whole.

    Verse 3

    Jesus, Lord, our true example, you have shown how we must live.

    Teach us how to share with others everything we have to give.

    Let our days be spent in service; bring us by your grace to know

    Healing is the church’s calling, and the path that we must go.

    Lord, Make Us Servants

    Verse 1         Lord, make us servants of your peace,

    where there is hate, may we sow love,

    Where there is hurt, may we forgive,

    where there is strife, may we make one.

    Verse 2         Where all is doubt, may we sow faith,

    where all is gloom, may we sow hope.

    Where all is night, may we sow light,

    where all is tears, may we sow joy.

    Verse 3         Jesus, our Lord, may we not seek

    to be consoled, but to console,

    nor look to understanding hearts,

    but look for hearts to understand.

    Verse 4         May we not look for love’s return

    but seek to love unselfishly,

    For in our giving we receive,

    and in forgiving are forgiven.

    Verse 5         Dying, we live, and are reborn

    through death’s dark night to endless day,

    Lord, make us servants of your peace

    to wake at last in heaven’s light.
